I am so happy to see a post that does this movie justice. Why? In "Variety" recently, Oprah got a special dose of undeserved wrath. A writer criticized her for saying that she should not talk about how great the movie is, nor should she talk about Will Smith's movie, because she votes as a member of the Academy. The writer said that Oprah gets special treatment as she alone can talk about movies publicly and still vote for them. This just shows you how out of touch even mainstream reviewers in Tinsel Town are. Why? With movie prices up, fewer people are going to the theaters. More and more people wait for movies to come out on DVDs. More and more studios calculate expected profits, moreover, on how attractive a movie will be to foreign audiences. "Variety" muses all the time, for example, about how the French seem to prefer French movies. Golly gee. Imagine that. That the French would prefer their own movies to what Hollywood puts out. Get a clue, Hollywood. Just as anyone who sells books should be glad about a public book club that gets people to buy books, folks in the biz should also be glad that Oprah talks about movies. As for the expected demographic that you note, Hollywood is not paying attention. Would Neil Young have just finished recording a bunch of African American gospel music in Nashville if he thought that the music would have such a small audience? Would the BBC give the death of James Brown the type of air time that it devoted to him if the demographics that things that are Dream Girls-like had such limited appeal? The answer is a resounding no. Would Hank Williams and Elvis have begged, borrowed, and stolen from gospel and soul music not that long ago if those things that inspired the Dream Girls were for a limited audience? No. Mainstream Hollywood, get a grip. You don't have to just go for special effects from Chinese movies and the like to bring us all out to the theaters these days.
