Jewish pioneers in the newly formed state of Israel drained much of the swamp in the mid-'50s, hoping to turn 15,000 acres of fertile swampland into prime farmland. But like many well-meaning plans of the era, unforeseen consequences turned this plot bad. Birds and wildlife abandoned the once-lush haven. As the moist peat soil dried, a series of spontaneous subterranean fires burst forth, burning bushes throughout the valley, razing the precious topsoil. Worse, nitrates and phosphates that were once filtered by the swamp washed into the Sea of Galilee, polluting Israel's major freshwater reservoir. By the early 1990s the Hula Valley was a full-blown environmental disaster that threatened the health and well-being of millions.

Windsor man cited in accident with bloodmobile van

According to Fort Collins police investigators, Phillips turned west onto Harmony from Larimer Road 7 and collided with the van. The collision caused the bloodmobile to spin approximately 90 degrees and sent the van westbound across four lanes of traffic before it crashed through a fence and came to rest around a tree on the north side of Harmony. The driver of the van, Ben DeVries, 24, of Fort Collins, was extricated from his vehicle and taken to Poudre Valley Hospital.

According to the Partnership for a Drug Free America, one in five teenagers between the ages of 12 and 19 have used prescription drugs to get high. The prescription drugs most frequently abused by teenagers include stimulants such as Ritalin and Adderall, and painkillers like Vicodin and OxyContin. Vicodin use in particular is up, with 10 percent of 12th-graders reporting they had used the drug within the last year. While prescription drugs can be very helpful under the care and monitoring of a doctor, non-medical use of these substances can lead to serious health risks, addiction, or death.
