“Although there is no set policy for serving overweight individuals, all soldiers are encouraged and are provided with the facilities to exercise and to maintain an adequate standard of physical fitness,” the spokesman said. “As a policy, AFM members under the age of 55 years are required to sit for the Army Physical Fitness Test twice a year. Not attending or failing such a test will obviously be reflected in an individual's assessment report. Unless their body weight interferes with the satisfactory performance of their duties, overweight soldiers are not normally exempted any military duties.”

New research indicates that there is a simple way that investors can capture these mis-pricings and achieve returns superior to capitalization-weighted indexes. This is through a strategy called 'fundamental indexation.' Fundamental indexation means that each stock in a portfolio is weighted not by its market capitalization, but by some fundamental metric, such as aggregate sales or aggregate dividends. Like capitalization-weighted indexes, fundamental indexes involve no security analysis but must be rebalanced periodically by purchasing more shares of firms whose price has gone down more than a fundamental metric, such as sales, and selling shares in those firms whose price has risen more than the fundamental metric....

One way or another, it looks like kids aren't getting the message about what a healthy weight is, and for many, it turns out that their ideas are oddly skewed. Of the youths who were actually overweight, only about half (53.8%) accurately perceived themselves as overweight. Some 20 percent thought they were about the right weight, but the rest of those teens -- more than a quarter of them -- actually believed that they were underweight.

Stronger economies better able to withstand downturn, analysts say

Much attention is being paid to the so-called BRIC countries: Brazil; Russia; India and China. These four economies have attracted the lion's share of emerging-market investment, and accordingly they've been the last markets impacted in the market downturn. Funds that invest Brazil, Russia, India and China suffered net outflows in late May, fund-data firm Emerging Portfolio Fund Research reported. That's the first investor exodus since the firm began tracking these countries separately in October 2005, EPFR said.
