In all this darkness, there is one light. History shows us that one of Islam�s wonderful characteristics is that the more it is pushed down, the higher it rises. Muslims in Britain are now being stopped and searched, raided, arrested, humiliated and shot in something like the manner in which their brothers and sisters around the world are suffering. This has developed a sense of empathy with the plight of the rest of the Ummah. A growing number of young Muslims are now realising that no matter how hard they compromise their deen to blend in with the rest of British society (�mainstream society�, so called), when things go sour they will be treated with suspicion. This is not scaremongering but realism. The more the government condemns the concepts of shari�ah, khilafah and jihad, the more some Muslims are willing to dedicate their lives to establishing these things. The more Muslims are arrested, the more Muslims align themselves with the terror suspects. The recent unprecedented attack upon the niqab by virtually every government minister has united the Muslims as one body as they see the evident truth in the words of Allah that �The Jews and Christians will never be pleased with you until you follow their religion.� (Q. 2: 120).

The football competition cannot be seen from the perspective of victory or defeat. Rather it falls within the expressed objectives of the founding fathers of CISM which is the development of friendly relations between the Armed Forces of member nations; promote physical education and solidarity and contribute to the international effort for universal peace. For once the armed forces of African nations will not be fighting wars in Côte d'Ivoire, the Central African Republic, Chad, Sudan or Somalia. Rather they will be engaged in an exercise that will create friendship, solidarity and love among them. There will be no exchange of bullets; there will be only the dribbling of the ball. Like in all sporting competitions, some teams will win and others will loose. But the victory or defeat of the various teams will not be like the defeat or victory at war. No. there will be no blood, no tears, and no anger. There will be cheers, smiles and tears of joy. The football tournament will allow soldiers and officers to live longer and healthier lives, develop their physical qualities and contribute to the building of "a world in which justice, solidarity and peace prevail". And all will tie with the ideal encapsulated in the CISM motto: "friendship through sports".
