Summary of Outreach

Since 1994 the North Carolina Back to Sleep Campaign has conducted public education and awareness about SIDS and ways to reduce SIDS risk. We provide training and technical assistance; purchase media time/outlet; develop education materials and run news conferences for North Carolina.

Media Outreach:

Our media strategies are varied and far-reaching. We have sponsored news conferences or partnered with other to conduct news conferences; distribute press releases/press kits; launched bill board campaigns; purchased air time to run radio commercials; oversee the development of radio commercials; develop print materials and maintain SIDS information on the NC Healthy Start Foundations website.

Outcomes and Evaluation

Trainings are evaluated; we use Pregnancy Risk Assessment Survey data (PRAMS) to monitor infant sleep positioning and statewide SIDS data.

In 2000, the North Carolina SIDS rate dropped by 15% due in part to the public awareness campaign.

Additional Information

The North Carolina Back to Sleep campaign utilizes SIDS research findings to inform campaign strategies. Our tag line "Stomach to Play� Back to Sleep" promotes health development and SIDS risk reduction. We connect parents, grandparents, and health and social service professionals as well as child care givers to the N.C. Family Health Resource Line � 1.800.FOR.BABY and national SIDS resources.
