Summary of Outreach |
|||
According to 1998 data from the National Center for Health Statistics, Native Americans have the highest SIDS rates in the US. Sadly, Native American babies are 2.5 times more likely to die from SIDS than are white babies. These disturbing statistics prompted the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Health Service to collaborate with the Hudson Mohawk Affiliate to develop a SIDS risk reduction education program for the families of the ST. Regis Mohawk Nation. The program included professional education for health care providers, child care workers and other support professionals who work with families within the Tribe. It also included the development of family education materials about SIDS risk reduction to be distributed to all area hospitals, clinics and child care facilities. Lastly, the program also included a smoking cessation program for pregnant women, since smoking during and after pregnancy has been identified as a risk factor for increased risk of SIDS. The Fresh Start Families smoking cessation curriculum from the American Cancer Society is being used. |
