Inland cities making plans for promotion

An 'exciting' new program to promote Dubbo, Tamworth and Wagga Wagga is being planned but for now it's all being kept under wraps. All that is being said is the three inland regional city mayors have decided to go on the offensive, and take full advantage of a new regional cities promotions program announced by the NSW Government. Dubbo mayor Allan Smith said the inland forum held between the three cities late last week had decided to work on a proposal to promote their cities which they hope to present to the State Government in August "It's very exciting, but I can't release anything about it yet," Mayor Smith said. "It was a very good, fruitful meeting and we have made a decision to launch a promotional program together targeting Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong. "We're moving to the next stage and will make the presentation to the State Government in August and later to the Federal Government." Mayor Smith said the meeting also discussed how they should approach the finding of the Percy Allan Report which had identified a major infrastructure crisis in local government. "Local government has very big needs in infrastructure renewal, but regional cities have a slightly greater demand due to growth," Cr Smith said. "We need to put a regional interpretation on the report and see how we can improve outcomes. "We also had discussions in regards to the skills shortage which is a common issue. "In Dubbo we have shortages in the planning department, in Tamworth it's engineering and it's a mix in Wagga Wagga but there are also broad skills shortages across the regions - not just in council employees. We have to fix the problem or we won't be able to keep up our economic growth."
