Green schools for the Green Mountain State
Rutland Herald, VT - 21 hours ago California, Washington state, New Jersey and Massachusetts have to lowering our in-state demand and that student academic performance, health and attendance
My proposal is not just to encourage green school construction, but to join other states in requiring any new construction or significant rehabilitation that uses state funds to use green standards for that construction process. While I am a strong believer in local control when it comes to most investment decisions, the benefits of green schools are too important to leave on the table when budget-cutting is considered. Under our school funding system, not only does the individual town benefit from long-term savings, but the entire Education Fund is strengthened by such cost-containment measures. The energy challenge is one that is statewide, not community-to-community, and we all benefit from the improved environment.
