Now, in recognition of 50 years of black history, your friendly "Picks" author happily recalls some of the fabulous African-American athletes, coaches and other personalities I've had the privilege to interview throughout the half-century, as a telecaster, PR guy, play-by-play broadcaster, columnist and fan. The most exciting of all, Jackie Robinson, at the old Wilmington Park in 1952; my favorite pugilist bar none, Joe Louis, in his fading days at Pompton Lakes, N.J.; Jersey Joe Wolcott, a true gentleman, talked to on several occasions, including the Lower Delaware Gridiron Club; Olympian Jesse Owens, by far the best orator, also at the LDGC; Jim Brown, bulging muscles showing as he stripped to the waist in his Hotel Du Pont room; Bill Russell, cackling during a seminar at the U of Delaware; a former Cornell U. All-American end and one-time Delaware State (it was "College" then) president, Brud Holland; Dr. J, Julius Erving, as a golfer during a Tee-Off Against Arthritis outing at Garrisons Lakes G.C. (his following of young people made the Doc resemble the Pied Piper); ditto Charles Barkley at Maple Dale CC; Roy Campanella, both in the Dodgers dressing room following Game 1 of the '52 World Series and later, in a wheelchair (after his paralyzing auto accident), at the DSBA in Wilmington; hefty N.L. umpire Eric Gregg; Judy Johnson, Delaware's only rep in the Cooperstown Hall of Fame.

For the second straight season, Avella and Frazier squared off in a preliminary round game. Avella (8-15) atoned for last year's postseason loss with a win against the Commodores (6-19) at South Fayette. Shea Georgetti led Avella, scoring a game-high 23 points. He was 12 for 12 from the free-throw line.

WI-HI SPLITS IN TRI-MEET. Wicomico (7-3, 7-3) topped Colonel Richardson (0-10, 0-10) 64-12 while falling to Stephen Decatur 54-15. Winning twice for the Indians was Tim Voegeli, Dominique Wright, Mike Greenfield and Joe Waters. The 54 points by Decatur (11-0, 10-0) is the lowest it has tallied against a Bayside school this year. Skyler Snead, Latra Collick, Isaac Franklin, Nathan Bourne, Trevor Rickett, Harry Philavanh and Adrian Deward each recorded pins for Decatur against Wicomico.

Hall Jr. of Frankford, Billy Hall of Bridgeville, Michael Hall of Bridgeville and Paris Hall of Dagsboro; three daughters, George Anna Purnell of Frankford, Tyann Collick of Frankford and Tanya Parker of Wilmington; one sister, Anna Hall Fooks of Snow Hill, Md.; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mammoth wind farms on the way

As wind data is collected from its five other sites, three of which are within the Municipal District of Pincher Creek, the number of turbines in the area is expected to increase. �We�ve secured a quarter of the transmission line so it�s now over half full. Once it�s full, you can put all the turbines up you want, but it�s not going to do any good,� said Hope who expects that by the time Greenwind is ready to develop the other sites a further transmission line upgrade will be needed. The $11.6 million that Greenwind has paid to Altalink secures an outlet for both Yagos and Riverside�s power production. Out of the 800 megawatts capacity of the new line, Greenwind lays claim to an interest in 50 per cent, directly through its two newest projects and through partnerships on other wind projects in the area.
